Residents encouraged to Love Food Hate Waste and save £420 each year

5 November 2008

Research shows residents living in the London boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth, Kensington and Chelsea and Wandsworth waste 97,000 tonnes of food every year, costing a staggering £148m. This includes 4,482 tonnes of bread, £4.6m worth of apples, and £3.2m worth of pizza.

For every three bags of shopping residents buy, they effectively throw one bag straight in the bin.

The Love Food Hate Waste campaign aims to raise awareness of the problem, and provide help and advice on what we can do to combat it. It is run by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), with the support of Recycle Western Riverside.

Food waste can be dramatically reduced by storing food properly, planning shopping and meals, learning about use by and best before dates and learning about portion sizes.

Celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott agrees that something needs to be done about food waste. “The amount of food we throw away is criminal and we all need to take action and start changing our behaviour. That’s why I’m supporting Love Food Hate Waste,” he says.
