Residents reclaim their doorsteps
14 February 2007
Residents in south and west London are being urged to say 'no' to junk mail as part of a new Recycle Western Riverside (RWR) campaign.
An estimated 7.4 million pieces of unwanted mail are delivered to households in the four Western Riverside boroughs every week*. This campaign shows residents how to reclaim their littered doorsteps to help reduce this paper mountain.
Sam Jarvis, RWR Campaign Manager, says: "An easy way for people to reduce their household waste is to say 'no' to junk mail. It's frightening to think that over three million trees are used each year to produce junk mail, most of which ends up in the bin. It's time we all took a stand against this wasteful practice."
The RWR 'Reclaim your doorstep' roadshow is visiting shopping centres across the boroughs and so far 450 residents have pledged to say 'no' to junk mail by following RWR's five easy steps.
Resident, Ms. Aslam, visited the roadshow in Cromwell Road, Kensington and Chelsea. She said: "I get really annoyed with the amount of junk mail I receive, so I'm thrilled to find out that there are things I can do to reduce the amount I receive."
