The RWR Composting Roadshow shows residents how easy composting is.

Residents aim to cut their rubbish by a third this Easter

5 April 2007

Residents in south west London are being urged to compost their kitchen and garden waste at home, as part of a new Recycle Western Riverside (RWR) campaign.

The RWR composting roadshow will visit garden centres and DIY stores throughout April and the team will even knock on doors to inspire residents to start composting this spring.

When kitchen and garden waste rots in landfill it produces methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Composting is a more sustainable way to get rid of this waste and at the same time creates a resource that will help make gardens bloom.

Sam Jarvis, RWR Campaign Manager, says: "Remarkably around a third of our rubbish can be composted, so by setting up a composter you can dramatically reduce the amount of rubbish you put out for the bin men."

"Spring is a busy period for gardeners, so it's the perfect time to get composting. Our campaign will show that composting is fun, easy and can save you money. And you don't even need a garden; an indoor composter can make great fertiliser for house plants or hanging baskets."

Resident Ross Edwards visited the roadshow at Homebase in Kensington. He said: "I didn't realise how much waste you can actually put in a composter. I was surprised that egg boxes and cardboard as well as kitchen scraps can be composted."
