Recycling campaign gets Royal College of Art stamp of approval
26 June 2006
Recycle Western Riverside's (RWR) advertising campaign encouraging residents in south and west London to start recycling has caught the eye of the prestigious Royal College of Art.
The RWR 'Just when will you start recycling?' campaign imagery is being used by the College as the backdrop for their internationally-acclaimed, annual Summer Show.
Show Curator, Adam Tharbo, approached RWR after seeing the campaign posters on the London Underground in Kensington and Chelsea. He explains: "This year, one of the key themes of our show is sustainability. We were looking for an image to represent this theme and RWR's evocative campaign suited us perfectly. We were thrilled when they agreed to be part of the exhibition."
The RWR large-scale mural showing London landmarks submerged in rubbish measures 14 metres in length and provides an ideal setting for many of the eco-friendly designs on display.
Wandsworth resident Corinne Bacon is one of the postgraduate students displaying work at the Show. Corinne has invented the go-anywhere 'napsac' - a reliable and environmentally-conscious solution to the problem of disposable nappies. She said: "A staggering eight million nappies are thrown away every day in the UK. My product makes using reusable nappies easier, more hygienic and affordable. I hope my invention will have a real impact on preventing thousands of nappies being sent to landfill. It's very fitting that we were able to join forces with the RWR campaign for our end of year show."
Sam Jarvis, RWR campaign manager, said: "We are delighted to be involved in the Royal College of Art's end-of-year show. It's encouraging to see so many young designers developing products that provide truly innovative solutions to the country's waste problem."
