Eco-elf Faaiza Bashir delivers information on the doorstep in Wandsworth.

Eco-elves go door-to-door

19 December 2006

This week residents in south and west London may receive an unusual visitor at their front door, as Recycle Western Riverside's (RWR) eco-elves go door-to-door.

As part of the RWR 'Don't let your recycling go to waste' campaign the team of eco-elves are set to visit thousands of flats and houses to deliver their festive recycling message. They will tell residents how important it is to recycle their extra Christmas waste and will give everyone they visit a set of recycling-themed decorations.

Each decoration represents a different item that can't be recycled in residents' collection service and suggests a sustainable alternative. It is hoped these will be hung on Christmas trees in homes, acting as a strong visual reminder to recycle the right things.

Marina Leistrumiene, from Wandsworth, was visited by eco-elf Faaiza Bashir yesterday. Marina said: "I'm a keen recycler but I didn't realise that it was so important to put the correct things in my recycling. This Christmas I'll make sure that I recycle the right things."

Marina used to think she could put yoghurt pots and meat trays in her orange sack, but has now learned that she can only recycle paper, card, tins, cans, aerosols, glass bottles and plastic bottles. Marina was also thrilled to discover that Wandsworth Council offer a Christmas tree recycling service.
