The BIG recycle gets thumbs up
18 October 2004
Western Riverside residents gave a huge thumbs up for recycling during this year’s national BIG recycle week (18 – 25 October), by adding their thumbprints to a large work of art made by local school children. Recycle Western Riverside, in conjunction with the local councils, organised events to raise awareness of what materials can be recycled.
A 1.5m x 1m picture of a glass jar – representing just one of the materials that the councils collect for recycling – visited local venues during the week, together with recycling mascot, Recycling Ricky. Residents were encouraged to add their thumbprints to the artwork to show their commitment to recycling.
Jim Fielder, Campaign Manager for Recycle Western Riverside, said: “Residents showed tremendous enthusiasm for recycling and we are delighted that so many people joined in to give their thumbs up. This shows that Western Riverside residents are strongly behind the campaign’s aim to increase the recycling rates and reduce the vast amount of rubbish we all throw away each year.”
All those who made a pledge to recycle were given stickers, pens and notepads made from recycled materials, as well as leaflets about their council’s recycling facilities.
