Green carpet première for ‘Cans, Jars and Videotape’
29 September 2005
Last night saw the film première of “Cans, Jars and Videotape” – a 20-minute short featuring London residents talking about their personal experiences of recycling. The green carpet event, held at the Ritzy cinema in Brixton, was attended by residents who starred in the film as well as council representatives and waste industry insiders.
The film – part of a Community Action Project run by the Recycle Western Riverside campaign – encourages local involvement in recycling across the London boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth, Kensington and Chelsea and Wandsworth.
In the film, residents from different backgrounds talk candidly about their recycling habits and what motivates them to recycle. Featuring people living in flats with estate recycling banks and houses with doorstep collections, it shows the broad range of recycling experiences in central London.
The residents’ stories are made even more personal because residents themselves were involved in producing the film, both behind and in front of the camera, with the help of the Storymakers’ Syndicate.
Heather Stabler, Community Outreach Officer (RWR), says: “The film gives us a fantastic tool to help spread the word about recycling in our local communities. We hope it will inspire many more people to get involved in recycling by showing just how straightforward and convenient it now is.”
Lambeth resident Gloria Imgbi, who appears in the film with her husband and baby daughter, says: “I am a keen recycler and took part in the film because I wanted to show people just how much they can do, and how easy it is. I recycle because I can do my little bit to save the environment, it saves me money and it reduces waste.”
