Shoppers wise up to waste
30 September 2003
An estimated 9,000 shoppers in Hammersmith & Fulham and Wandsworth were given green goodies and instructions on using their orange sack recycling scheme, at six supermarket events in April and September.
"Our campaign research has shown making recycling easy for people is the key to getting them recycling more,” says Campaign Manager Jim Fielder. “Residents we spoke to welcome the new expanded recycling scheme. Everyone should have received information through their door, but these promotions help to answer any questions and explain why it is important to make the effort".
Shoppers were given reusable cloth shopping bags – to help reduce the huge number of carrier bags thrown away every year – as well as fridge magnets, recycled pencils and a leaflet outlining the new recycling scheme.
The simple scheme enables residents to put all their recycling together in one sack – paper, card, drinks cans, food tins, empty aerosol cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and glass jars. The orange sack scheme was launched in April 2003 and now reaches all residents who have rubbish collected from their doorstep.
The councils are also expanding recycling provision for people in flats by increasing the number of community recycling sites both on the street and in estates.
