Reth!nk Rubbish green van beats Congestion Charge

14 April 2003

Education Officers from the Reth!nk Rubbish Western Riverside campaign are freely driving through the congestion charge zone teaching local children the importance of recycling more and reducing their rubbish. As the proud owners of an emission-free Citroën Berlingo Electrique van the team are exempt from the £5 congestion charge saving them up to £1,300 per year, as well as cutting down on pollution in London.

“We’ve nick-named the van Kermit after the little green frog,” says proud driver Dan Beenham. “You do get a few funny looks as you drive about, but we’re hoping the campaign’s bright green will help draw attention to the 3Rs message: reduce, reuse, recycle.”

Reth!nk Rubbish Western Riverside is a Western Riverside Waste Authority initiative within the London Boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth, Wandsworth and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The five year initiative, launched in January, encompasses a waste awareness, education and communication campaign delivered by Waste Watch and a market development, green procurement and waste minimisation programme with recycling consultancy services delivered by London Remade. The initiative is funded by Cory Environmental through the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme. Activities include advertising and PR events, a schools campaign and work with local councils and community groups to help increase recycling and improve services.
