Recycling success for Lambeth Total Recycling Scheme
20 November 2003
The London borough of Lambeth has achieved outstanding results only four weeks into their year-long Total Recycling Scheme - an impressive 50% of all 'rubbish' put out for collection is now being recycled - compared to an average of 10.9% for the borough as a whole. The trial serves around 500 households and consists of a weekly collection of dry recyclables, and garden and kitchen organics.
Kate Radford from the Rethink Rubbish Western Riverside Campaign said "The Lambeth trial scheme shows how, by working in partnership, we can dramatically increase recycling rates. Although this trial is in its early stages we hope that it can act as a case study for councils nationwide."
The scheme is being used as a trial to test the system before a new orange sack scheme for mixed dry recyclables is rolled out across the borough in April 2004 which will run alongside the current green box scheme.
